Seeing as our church is no longer listed on your blog roll Steve, I guess we would now be classified as a submerging church. Real pity because our dynamic worship leader just bought some Crocs this past week (they’ve just become ‘in’ in Pietermaritzburg).

I checked out the webpage link you provided. I agree with your analysis 99%. Churches that dumb down Jesus’ message and focus on marketing a watered down Gospel are the real heretics. I include in this group almost all those churches associated with Christian television, with their constant requests for money… sorry, I mean, their constant offering of a blessing in exchange for me sowing some seed to them!

The 1% disagreement I have with you is that you think this is what emerging church is trying to do. In fact, if you read the emerging church authors, you will find they are even more virulent in their opposition to the churches you are opposed to.

You are incorrect to think this is what “post modern” church is. You are definitely wrong in thinking that this is what the emerging church is trying to achieve.

I would highly recommend that you read “A Generous Orthodoxy” by Brian McLaren.

@Stephen: yes, I’m moving to Cape Town next year – will probably be staying in Obz. My fiance (wife by then!) will be studying a Masters in Diversity Studies at UCT for 2 years.

@Philip: you’re quite right – you didn’t mention “heresy” but rather spoke about “unorthodox.” Plenty of people think I’m unorthodox, even in the comments I added to your post, so I’m interested (and happy!) to find that you don’t think at least some of them are unorthodox.

I think the Emerging Church is more a result of viral internet marketing than anything. Due to its lack of scholarship and lean towards liberalism, it is destined to die out on its own or be absorbed back into the mainstream.

Please note I have edited the ‘Emerging threat’ blog to hopefully avoid such misunderstandings in future. Please note also that I did not use the word ‘heresy’, but rather the word ‘unorthodox’. Roger Saner brought in the word ‘heresy’ in a comment and then added some more quotes he thought I might find heretical. I have elsewhere criticised some emerging church opinions as being heretical, but I do not use that word in a shotgun approach to label everyone I disagree with. Make up your own mind about the quotes cited there.
